A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE
The Rio Negro region, between Iranduba and Barcelos, is home to one of the richest and most preserved avifaunas on the planet. In the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, where dark waters meet ancient forests, more than 500 species of birds create an incomparable natural spectacle for observers from all over the world.
Uiara Birdwatching offers exclusive river expeditions that combine a passion for ornithology with the comfort of premium infrastructure. Aboard the Ana Clara boat, specially adapted for high-quality ecotourism, you will live an immersive experience through the most diverse habitats of the Amazon.
Each dawn in the Amazon brings a unique symphony of songs and colors. In the first hours of the day, as the forest awakens, rare species like the Guianan Cock-of-the-rock display their vibrant plumage in mating rituals that few have the privilege to witness. The Wire-tailed Manakin, with its characteristic tail, dances among the branches, while the majestic Harpy Eagle glides silently over the canopies of ancient trees.
Our expeditions are carefully planned to maximize sightings in different habitats. We navigate streams where the Musician Wren echoes its melodic songs, explore river islands inhabited by colonies of Green-winged Trumpeters, and enter secret trails where the rare Bare-necked Fruitcrow can be observed in its natural habitat.

BIRD SPECIES
The Brazilian Amazon is home to the richest avifauna on the planet, with more than 1,300 cataloged species, of which approximately 500 can be observed during our expeditions to the Rio Negro. This extraordinary diversity results from the complexity of Amazonian habitats, from terra firme forests to flooded floodplains, each supporting unique bird communities adapted to specific conditions.

FAQ
During our 7-day expeditions, experienced observers typically record between 300 and 450 different species. This number may vary depending on the season, weather conditions, and the participants’ level of experience.
For beginners, it is common to identify between 200 and 300 species, while more experienced observers may, on occasion, exceed 500 species in a single expedition.
The high diversity is a result of the variety of habitats visited: terra firme forests, flooded floodplains (várzeas), river islands, rocky banks, and natural clearings. Each environment is home to unique bird communities, ensuring a rich experience and new sightings even on shorter itineraries.
We limit our groups to a maximum of 12 participants to guarantee a more personalized experience and increase the chances of sightings.
Small groups allow for quiet movement, access to narrower trails, and individualized attention from the guides. Furthermore, this policy contributes to minimizing environmental impact and respecting the natural capacity of the ecosystems visited.
Certainly! 🌿
Our expeditions are carefully planned to cater to observers of all levels — from beginners to experts.
Throughout the journey, our experienced guides offer continuous guidance on observation techniques, equipment use, and species identification. On board, we provide support materials, such as field guides in Portuguese and English, to further enrich the experience.
Many beginner participants are surprised by how much they can learn in just a few days. The abundance and diversity of Amazonian avifauna make learning natural, engaging, and extremely rewarding.
Prior experience is not necessary—just a genuine interest in birds and nature is enough to make the most of the expedition.
During the trip, we offer basic guidance on the use of binoculars, observation techniques, and best practices in natural environments.
Many participants with no prior experience end up discovering a new passion along the journey. The combination of the richness of the Amazonian avifauna and the experience of our guides creates the perfect setting to awaken a lasting interest in birdwatching.
The Amazon offers excellent birdwatching opportunities throughout the year, but each season has its own particularities.
During the dry season (from June to November), access to trails is easier, and the concentration of birds at water points increases. Mornings are cooler, and bird activity tends to be intense — an ideal scenario for those looking to record the largest possible number of species.
The rainy season (from December to May), on the other hand, transforms the forest into an even more lush environment. During this period, migratory species join resident ones, and the abundance of fruits attracts large concentrations of parrots, macaws, and toucans. Additionally, the reproductive cycle of many species offers unique opportunities to observe mating behaviors and active nests.
Temperatures in the region range between 24°C and 32°C during the day, with high relative humidity, between 80% and 90%. Mornings tend to be cooler and pleasant, ideal for more intense activities.
Rains are frequent, especially between December and May, but rarely hinder activities for long periods.
The Ana Clara boat offers a climate-controlled and comfortable environment during adverse weather conditions, and our activities are adjusted as needed. Furthermore, tropical rains often provide unique observation moments — many species become more active immediately after rainfall, revealing an even more fascinating side of the Amazon.
Contrary to what many imagine, the rainy season can be an extremely productive period for birdwatching. Tropical rains tend to be brief and intense, followed by moments of high bird activity. The vegetation becomes even more lush, attracting a greater diversity of species, while many birds exhibit unique reproductive behaviors.
With proper equipment and flexibility in schedules, it is possible to enjoy the best conditions at any time of year. Our specialized guides are always prepared to adjust activities and maximize observation opportunities, regardless of the weather.

Although we recommend using personal binoculars for greater comfort and familiarity, we provide professional-quality equipment for loan during the expeditions.
We offer models from brands like Zeiss and Swarovski, with different magnifications, to cater to the individual preferences of each participant.
Using your own binoculars has the advantage of allowing for personalized adjustments and better adaptation to your visual characteristics. If you are planning to purchase new equipment, we suggest 8×42 or 10×42 models from brands recognized for optical excellence and durability.
Clothing in neutral tones, such as green, brown, khaki, or beige, is essential to avoid startling sensitive birds. Opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that ensure comfort in hot and humid environments.
We recommend wearing long pants for protection against insects and thorny vegetation on trails. Waterproof footwear with good grip is fundamental for safety on both trails and wet boats.
For flooded areas, rubber boots are the best option. Waterproof sneakers are ideal for less intense activities.
Wide-brimmed hats help protect against the sun and facilitate the use of binoculars. Avoid clothing with flashy prints, noisy fabrics, or accessories that might reflect light, as they can scare away local wildlife.
We are ready to turn your dream of birdwatching in the Amazon into reality. Our specialized team is available to answer questions, customize expeditions, and provide all the necessary information to plan your unforgettable journey through the Amazonian rivers and forests.
